Liberty University Should be Lauded

The past two months have been one of the hardest times of my life as a Christian. It has been gut-wrenching to read about ex-Muslims being attacked by Muslims and some Christians alike. I had some sleepless nights because I could not fathom how some Christians could give Muslims a platform. Not especially when they knew Mohammad Khan has declared his war on other ex-Muslims, indiscriminately raising doubts about their past merely based on “absolutes” in Islam, their accents of Arabic (Islamic) terms and their non-Islamic (Arabic) names even when he had no prior knowledge of their background. I still don’t understand how Christians fell for such a ruse.

Liberty University committee investigating Dr. Ergun Caner’s background has concluded its findings and the final decision has been made. He is going to relinquish his post as president and dean of the seminary but remain on as a professor of apologetics. I hope this decision marks the demise of attacks on ex-Muslims and the beginning of healing for us Christians who have been squabbling publicly. I hope we have learned from this ordeal.

I knew from the outset that Mr. Khan was majoring in lies. He was concerned that “Allah’s light” was being extinguished thus employing certain absolutes in Islam that are no absolute after all. Dr. Caner did not help the situation either because he gave opportunities to his critics to raise doubts. I am hoping that we tread on carefully next time similar questions are raised about a Christian brother or sister of Muslim background. The fact that Mr. Khan has other videos of ex-Muslims he accuses of being fake ex-Muslims should be a conspicuous clue that we should take whatever he presents with a grain of salt.

I have a very low opinion of these ex-Muslims bashers. Here are a few reasons. First, when I challenged Mr. Khan’s interpretation of Islam in April, he quickly demanded that I post my findings juxtaposing the Arabic commentary with my interpretation in English. This comes from a man who admitted to a Southern Baptist blog audience in February that he couldn’t read well, let alone understand, Arabic.

Second, I know for a fact that Mr. Khan has not read my autobiography, Cracks in the Crescent, and yet he reviewed and rated it here. Other Muslims have not read it either and still that did not stop them from reviewing and rating it here. Now that tells us about their objectivity in their presentations of any ex-Muslim’s background.

Third, when my asylum petition was denied and it made the Associated Press wire, Mr. Khan and his Muslim friends jumped on it, copying the links to articles on Facebook, other websites and Twitter. (Some Muslims even edited the official AP release and added “due to the many discrepancies in his accounts” to it and then posted it on my book’s fan page masquerading it as part of the original AP article.) How desperate can they get! Mr. Khan had a reason for suspecting that I was a fake ex-Muslim. First of all, my legal name (Wario Zachariah Abarufa Hussein) is different from my penname (Hussein Hajji Wario). Instead of asking for a clarification, he jumped on it declaring me a fake ex-Muslim merely based on my name. For the record, my name has changed through the years. I go by aliases as well. I often misspell my name for security reasons when participating in events or go just by one name. Zachariah is my baptismal name. Abarufa (correctly spelled Abbarufa) is an Orma (my people group) nickname that my mother’s midwife gave to me. I added these names to my official name on April 10, 1995. Hussein is my given name and Hajji Wario was my father’s name. The reverse in the order and the misspelling of Abbarufa happened because a Kenyan government official wrote it that way on my official identification card, perhaps because I could not bribe to get the document, and hence it is stuck legally :) I attempted at least to reverse the order of my name in 1998 when I visited Kenya (which I explained in my autobiography in Chapter fourteen) but I was unsuccessful because some Christians (irony) bombed the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi in August 1998. I still have the official U.S. government document (I-20) that I was issued to change my name on the U.S. visa. So, if some concerned Muslims really want to find out who I really am, they are welcome to pay a visit to Kenya. Go to Garsen in the Tana River district and ask for my family. They should also ask Muslim leaders in Mombasa why they have not made their rebuttal to my autobiography public. They had a problem with the opening line of chapter fifteen, “Islam is its own worst enemy…” and were supposed to make their findings public at a press conference after Jumaah (Friday) Prayer on March 20, 2009. I am still waiting.

Fourth, I seriously doubt that Muslims started this endeavor to find the truth but distract and confuse Christians. I know it for a fact because when I wrote a post, “Lack of Absolutes in Islam Fizzles Attack on Ex-Muslim,” Muslims started a rumor on Facebook that my website was spreading a Trojan virus. They were warning people on Dr. Ergun Caner’s fan page not to go to my website. Complains were coming from the same group of Muslims that frequented the page with links deriding Dr. Caner. That virus must have been very selective to attack only Muslim computers! Even when Christians reassured them that there were no viruses, Muslims still maintained their story. Now that tells you how much truth they were seeking in this matter.

Brethren, our lack of restraints has caused irreparable damage to Christian outreach to Muslims. We have made it far worse than Dr. Ergun Caner did. I find it quite disturbing how some of us justified the public discussion and judgment of Dr. Caner while the same call for restraint when it comes to recent public arrest of Christian apologetics in Dearborn, Michigan. Our continued discussion of Dr. Caner simply because Liberty decided against making its report public is not justified. In fact, we should laud Liberty for not availing information that detractors of ex-Muslims could use as a trophy. (Some Muslims are waiting to put an icing on their cake.) The more we discuss this now irrelevant issue, the more irrelevant our ministries will become. Instead, let us employ the same fervor and vigor we exhibited in our discussion of Dr. Caner in our outreach and evangelism efforts. We must overcome our manmade theological differences. The time for healing division among Christians has come.

    John…
I may never again meet someone who shows their youth / arrogance / stupidity the way that one concise clear statement just did for you. That was a masterpiece. You should get a job in government.

  • John

    Craig,

Your 47 yr old self wouldn’t know truth if it smacked you in the face. Your boy, Caner lied repeatedly to build himself up. Do people not realize he wouldn’t have even been Seminary prez at Liberty if it wasn’t for his fake story. HaHa! The great thing about all of this is all you have to do is watch the videos to see Ergun’s lies. Craig, you’re old butt probably didn’t even watch them. LOL In the videos, Ergun claimed to have come to America when he was 15 when court documents show he was 3 – LIE
He claimed to have debated Shabir Ally – LIE He claimed he debated Abdul Saleeb – LIE He claimed his native language was Arabic before English – LIE He claimed he lived in Turkey on the border of Iraq – HAHA OUTLANDISH LIE! He claimed he lived in majority Muslim countries before coming to America – LIE He claimed to have broken English even at his conversion when he was 16 – LIE He said he trained in jihad and was raised to hate America – LIE Craig, your the biggest tool bag alive. Keep believing in your heart that truth in the pulpit doesn’t matter. You can be buds with him all you want but you can’t support dishonesty. Your a pathetic old man.

  • Dan Livingston

My apologies. I had two pages open at the same time, as I was responding to another one of your articles.

  • Dan Livingston

A direct answer in regards to the damning evidence against Mr. Caner would be greatly appreciated instead of deleting my messages Hussein, and this goes for you also Craig, instead of talking about Mr. White, who doesn’t cancel out the facts.

  • Dan Livingston

So explain to me Craig, how does James White have anything to do with the lies that Mr. Caner has been telling for years and the damning evidence that is there to prove it? If you can give me a valid explanation for the endless deception of Mr. Caner, I would greatly appreciate it. And I would prefer a direct answer, instead of dodging my question. Thank you very much.

  • Craig Daliessio

    Danny boy…
I am not gullible. I practice TRUE GRACE. You know full well that as soon as the Caner matter disappears, so does your beloved father figure, Jimmy boy. He was nobody when this began and the Great Nothing is calling his name louder every minute. The WORST thing that could have happened to White was Caner being demoted. Because this is now being exposed for the insane, OBSESSION that it is.
Go tell your mail order doctor buddy that there is no more Mr. Moriarity and now Holmes will have to retire. James White’s 15 minutes of fame turned out to be borrowed time from the beginning.

  • Dan Livingston

You are done because you cannot give an answer to my questions. This is altogether expected of you Hussein. Nobody is fooled by your attempts to point the finger at others instead of answering the questions in regards to Mr. Caner.

    • http://www.cracksinthecrescent.com Hussein

I am done arguing with you because of your one track mind.

  • Dan Livingston

The issue I have with you Hussein, is that you are completely biased. There is no doubt that the Muslims have not acted properly on their side at times and they are wrong in that regard, but you continue to repeatedly use this as a pretext to justify the actions of Ergun Caner, as well as take advantage of the understandable emotions of the Christians, and using it to suit your own means. Once again, the very foundation of your entire argument amounts to nothing more than ad hominem, endless rhetoric, and polemic with no sound basis.

  • Dan Livingston

Hussein, regardless of whether there is a personal beef between Ergun Caner and James White, this does not negate the irrefutable evidence against Mr. Caner. You of all people should know that in a situation such as this, the facts are the most relevant. You’re descending into the realm of ad hominem, and those who are gullible, such as Craig, do not see it for what it is, or choose not to. Your argument is that because Mr. White is an unsavory character in your view, the truth should not be accepted from him and instead the Christians should side with Mr. Caner, although this is a laughable irony in itself when one simply looks at the evidence concerning his background.

    • http://www.cracksinthecrescent.com Hussein

      Dan,

Facts, in this case sins, are irrelevant after repentance. Dr. Caner has repented. You, Dr. White and others want some form of evidence. Liberty University is not releasing it. I know for a fact that Muslims would use it as propaganda. Dr. White would use it to continue his campaign. I am done discussing with you this matter. Repentance equals innocence. Liberty has retained him as a professor, only a jealous person would make it an issue.

  • http://none Craig Daliessio

    Dan…I’m right here
James White isn’t a blip on anyone’s radar pal. His soul purpose in attacking Caner was infamy. Period. He is considered a fringe nutcase by everyone except his devotees.
He argues Islam with Muslims and tells them they are wrong. Does that not sound megalomaniacal? No? Then you have hit your kool-aid limit.

  • Dan Livingston

You also continue to slander and malign the name of James White, who is one of our great and respected Christian brothers, and who has done much good. It seems evident to me that you are trying to incite hatred in our hearts against him and this is completely opposed to our basic Christian principles. Your argument is that because he is in agreement with Mo Khan concerning the overwhelming evidence against Ergun Caner, that this means that he in some way endorses all Muslims or is in support of them. You are manipulating the devotion and fervor within the breasts of our Christian brethren, to turn against this man and at the same time, that if the truth comes from someone who is outside of our faith, that we should not accept it.

  • Dan Livingston

Where’s Craig when you need him Hussein? He seems like the only individual who is blinded to the lies of Ergun Caner. I’ve read your articles concerning Ergun Caner and your frequent attacks on Mo Khan, but I have yet to see you give a direct answer towards the many question posed towards you in regards to Ergun Caner’s deceptions. Rather, you prefer to dodge the questions and instead respond with questions of your own, a typical argumentative move for one who doesn’t want to provide the answer. You also seem keen on perpetuating that because Mo Khan adheres to the Islamic faith, his word should not be accepted nor acknowledged, which is utter bigotry on your part.

    • http://www.cracksinthecrescent.com Hussein

      Dan,

Why do I need Craig? My position is clear and I can defend it. I know some Muslims are honest the same way some Christians are. In the case of Mr. Khan, had he disclosed enough information on Islam and Muslims to the Southern Baptist blog audience in February, this saga would have been long resolved and forgotten. He didn’t because he wasn’t for the truth. As for Dr. White, he exploited his audience’s ignorance of Islam and Muslims to continue his discussion of Dr. Caner publicly. So far only his Reformed followers believe he does not have anything personal. Even the media has noticed that he has something against Dr. Caner. How else would he get “Caner’s vocal critic” label?

  • jason noor abdullah

oh really mr hussein ur title suggest it is and u even mention about him even my 5 yr old kid knows the difference between the shahadah and the al fatihah you point out mr kahn but u never refute what ergun says he even lie about his age of conversion oh come on mr hussein u really are in denial u just cant face the fact that ergun in a compulsive liar even mr white have brought in an arab to check ergun suppose speech in arab and the finding is ergun is speaking gibberish like you said ur book have nothing to do with ergun and the issue now is about ergun so stick to the subject mr hussein

  • Jason Noor Abdullah

first of all you urself admit it that ur book have nothing to do with ergun and as for ergun saying him a muslim and yet he does not know the diffrence between the shahadah and surah al fatihah who you trying to kid here mr hussein.mr hussein in this blog u try again to decieve the people coz the title of the blog have nothing to do again with ergun you seems to be the one who is lost the discussion is about ergun caner not ur book

    • http://www.cracksinthecrescent.com Hussein

Jason, you are very hard to follow. I did not start my blog to discuss the Ergun Caner saga. Dr. James White has a blog too and he did not start his to discuss Dr. Caner. You are just confused. You never read my autobiography yet you claim that it is “a bunch of (you know what).” Why this blatant lie? Did Dr. Caner mess up the Shahadah and Suratul Al Fatihah 100 percent of the time? About Mr. Khan and his prowess of Islam, what devout Muslim would say the month of Ramadhan has 31 days? Mohammad Khan had it in writing for almost eight months. He even sent a letter to Dr. Caner with that error. Follow the links at the article I pointed out and you will see for yourself. You know very well that a lunar month has no more than 30 days and fasting on either of the Idd is haram. Does that make Mr. Khan a liar and a fake Muslim?

  • John

Who cares if Kahn lies. He’s an unbeliever in the minds of Christians anyway. But if the great Ergun Caner lies, though he represents Christianity, that’s OK in fact it’s not even lying. HaHaHa! Sad how we call unbelievers liars and protect our own when they hurt a Christian’s witness like Caner has

  • John

Question for you Hussein. Did Ergun Caner lie repeatedly about certain areas of his life story in the videos. Remember, we only have a handful of videos of Caner speaking. This doesn’t even include the many distortions that might have been made at his other speaking engagements. Your answer to this question will tell us all we need to know about your desire for truth in the pulpit.

  • John

It’s funny how James White is the “bad guy” in all this. Now we have fools on this page calling White a liar? What? I firmly believe that Ergun sought out people to hear his fake story after 9-11 so this is 100% his doing. They didn’t use anything that wasn’t factual. You can watch the freeking videos for goodness sake! Ergun was no doubt a muslim but a half hearted one at best from all his ridiculous screw ups that seem simple to other muslims. He lied again and again and again and again, i could keep going, about when he came to America. Sometimes it was 13 yrs old, sometimes 14, sometimes 15 when the dude was actually around the age of three. Pathetic! He was born in Turkey and Sweden and went to Beruit and Cairo before coming to America. Hahahaha! Seriously dude, no one even knows or gives a crap about Caner outside of Lynchburg VA or Liberty for that matter. You know how I know? I went there and have since lived in two separate parts of the country. They haven’t heard of him! This didn’t do great damage to Christianity, it only hurt the University for taking so long to demote him and Ergun himself. Until and unless he repents, he will never be taken seriously again. Oh and BTW, muslims were already laughing at his lack of knowledge and lies long before James White got a hold of anything. Maybe next time Caner should keep his mouth shut instead of provoking White like he did when he attacked his debates calling them “Jerry Springer shows.” He backed down from debating White 4 years ago because he would have gotten destroyed and still had the nerve to come at White 4 years later and provoke him. Wrong move caner. He got what he deserved.

  • Jason Noor Abdullah

mr hussein ur refutation is not in any of the videos or evidence given to u by either mr khan or mr white and also ur book does not even refute anything even when u call mr white you seems to be at lost and you did not refute any of the fact again all you ever did is call them liars you really are a pathetic loser mr hussein rite now you are in denial you cant take the factual fact that ergun caner is a compulsive liar the uses people ignorance to gain money and fame the same can be said for u mr hussein ur book is nothing more than a bunch of BS.

    • http://www.cracksinthecrescent.com Hussein

      Jason, you say:

the fact again all you ever did is call them liars you really are a pathetic loser mr hussein rite now you are in denial you cant take the factual fact that ergun caner is a compulsive liar the uses people ignorance to gain money and fame the same can be said for u mr hussein ur book is nothing more than a bunch of…

You seem quite confused. 1. Mr. Khan is a liar because he called Dr. Ergun Caner a fake ex-Muslim. He can’t retract his charges even when court documents have proven him wrong. Mr. Khan was stretching the “facts” for Islam’s gain, all with his limited knowledge. You have not explained why Mr. Khan reviewed a book he never read. How do you justify that? Is he a liar? By the way, I never said my book has anything to do with Dr. Caner. I was simply showing people I discussed my name–which Mr. Khan is trying to make an issue–in the book. 2. You say that my book “is nothing more than a bunch of” lies. (Would you please watch your language?) Please substantiate your charge? Where have you read it? What pages contain these lies? Please point them out or else you are a liar yourself. Thank you.

im a former christian who converted to islam i’ve been watching and following ergun story from the beginning and mr hussein what i found out is that ergun have been lying from day one you cant deny the fact mr hussein ergun lying about his age when he converted and about his family background even his name he lies about it and all those evidence comes from a US govrn agency .i see mr hussein that you have never refuted mr khan when he produce his evidence all you ever did is call him a liar you do know that calling someone a liar is not refuting him but in actual fact shows what a pathetic loser you are
if im a parent who is about to send my child to school i would not send him to a school that have a teacher who lies

    • http://www.cracksinthecrescent.com Hussein

      Jason, you say:

You seem to have no idea whether I have responded to Mr. Khan’s accusations. Would you please read Lack of Absolutes in Islam Fizzles Attacks on Ex-Muslims? Thank you. Mr. Khan is a liar. What do you say about his review of Cracks in the Crescent, a book he never read?

  • http://none Craig Daliessio

    Hussein…
If this disaster has borne any fruit whatsoever it would be that I have come in contact with a true brother in Christ such as yourself. Sadly, it has borne the fruit of bitterness and sadness in my heart as well. I never knew of James White and his followers before this mess and I wish I never had. Mohammad Khan is understandable. His beliefs lie diametrically opposed to mine and those of Christianity. He is a zealot and zealots do what he does. Zealots lie and believe their own lies with their whole heart. Perhaps that was the common ground that James White saw with this man.
White and his minion have cast a pawl over Christianity that may never lift. Robert Bork was treated with more respect in a hatchet-job senate investigation than was Ergan Caner. I do not believe L.U. should be lauded. I am an alumni and a current student. Liberty should be ashamed. Liberty caved to a far-fringe group with questionable mental stability. I worry that this committee has unwittingly opened a door for this group to try to hijack the entire school. What will they try next? Will they go back in time through 40 years of “Old Time Gospel Hour” broadcasts and find error in our beloved Dr. Falwell? Will Jonathan Falwell or Jerry Falwell Jr. be next? Will they make the decision about whomever is named the next LBTS President by threatening this same sort of attack? Liberty should have slammed the door in their collective faces and extended Dr. Caner as President, another year and made a large and loud press conference statement. I worry for the health and future of my beloved Liberty University because I fear that in kindness and an effort to live peacefully, they cow-toed to the wrong people. I fear this committee thought far more highly of our attackers. I say “our” because in my heart I see men and women who only wanted to use Ergun Caner as a means to a far more devious end. I believe Liberty itself is their goal. They have tested the waters and found them quite agreeable to their particular sort of attack. They will not stop, as evidenced by their continued outcry wanting MORE blood from Caner and now dragging his wife and children into the vulgarity.
I find them despicable and I wish them ill. Be careful Hussein, these people are ruthless and want to destroy everyone who disagrees. My only satisfaction is that they will eventually have no one remaining to attack and will begin one day, to turn on themselves.
Thank you for your ministry here.

    question: what is “theological leverage”?

My view on LU’s findings: They are doing damage control… they are sugar coating the things that ergun did. I am thankful they are demoting him… Ergun needs to repent publicly to his students and the people he lied too… Even pagan athleteswho have lied about steroids or cheated on their wife know that the appropriate thing to do is apologize to everyone who looks up to you, to the world. Yet i have heard no official apology from Ergun Caner.

I wonder what God calls “factually contradictory misstatements”?

    just some thoughts…

    • http://www.cracksinthecrescent.com Hussein

      Aaron,
I apologize for not responding to your comment sooner. I would like you to know that I do not agree with what Elmer Towns said in the Christianity Today article. Is that where you get the “theological leverage” from? I briefly addressed Dr. Towns in my first article on this saga, “Desperate Muslims and Ignorant (Ignoramus) Christians I.”
Do you know that those who are waiting for evidence of repentance are waiting to use it to further their propaganda? Dr. Caner’s repentance suffices. We need to stop looking for evidence. Let us wait and see his fruits.
