Dr. James White’s Damage to Christian Outreach to Muslims

The merit of the discussion about Dr. Ergun Caner has come to who screams the loudest. His vocal critic has declared victory because he claims that the defenders of Ergun Caner have “gone silent since his removal as Dean of LBTS.” What a sad assessment, considering most Christians in this veiled reference have let go this issue because they have decided to move on! Dr. James White calls for Dr. Caner’s public apology. How about he sets an example and takes ownership for the damage he has done to Christian outreach to Muslims? He publicly has insulted Muslims who have corrected his mistakes on Islam. He also has speculated on issues that have “confirmed” Muslims’ suspicion of Christian ministries’ motives and exacerbated “residual mistrust” that some Christians of Muslim background have of Christianity. Some Muslims, like the ones who have reacted negatively toward Acts 17 Apologetics missionaries in Dearborn, MI, suspect Christians use their pictures and videos for Christian missionaries’ fundraising efforts. (You can listen to Josh McDowell’s interview on Moody Radio about his experience at the Arab festival here.) Even some who convert to Christianity still remain suspicious. Their mistrust keeps them out of worship services, Bible study and fellowship with fellow Christians.

Most of Dr. White’s damages could have been avoided had Christianity Today met his expectation in its initial article on Dr. Ergun Caner. Since he wasn’t satisfied, he speculated that Liberty University is its main advertiser—even when it is false—thus exacerbating some Muslims’ mistrust of Christian organizations. CT is not “a profit-driven” media organization like he wants people to believe. He has yet to retract his comments. He has, without any doubt, tarnished CT and LU’s reputations among Muslims and confused some Christians of Muslim background’s of Christian organizations. Instead of continuing to demonize Dr. Caner, Norm Geisler, Emir Caner et al, it is about time that Dr. White takes ownership for the damage he has done and does what he has been “preaching” Dr. Caner to do all along. Anything short of it remains sheer hypocrisy.

Hussein whereas i agree that we need not to wash our dirty linen in the public Arena yet I have to agree with Dr white that the Likes of Caner were doing more harm to the body of Christ and missions than anything else. Men who live a public lie yet they claim to represent our LORD should never be left and all of us assume a blind eye. false prophets should be called out in public

He publicly has insulted Muslims who have corrected his mistakes on Islam.

Please be specific – who and when?

Some Muslims, like the ones who have reacted negatively toward Acts 17 Apologetics missionaries in Dearborn, MI, suspect Christians use their pictures and videos for Christian missionaries’ fundraising efforts.

Wouldn’t that be the Muslims’ fault, not the missionaries’ fault?

Their mistrust keeps them out of worship services, Bible study and fellowship with fellow Christians.

You switched from discussing “Some Muslims” to “fellow Christians”. Please correct the disconnect.

He has, without any doubt, tarnished CT and LU’s reputations among Muslims

Right, b/c White was the one who made all those false statements about his own history…

By the way, you need to read my previous post on Dr. White to understand what I mean. I cannot repeat it in comments. You can also follow links to his blogs and tweets. Thanks.

Wouldn’t that be the Muslims’ fault, not the missionaries’ fault?

You seem to make excuses for Dr. White’s lack of restraint in this matter. How sad is it that you bring up how Muslims’ reacting to Acts 17 missionaries would be at fault, but apparently, turn a blind eye to Dr. White blowing this saga out of proportion.

Wow. You really do have your own little world, don’t you?

  • prchrbill

Do you ever consider the damage you are doing to Christianity by constantly attacking Dr. James White, misquoting Dr. James White, making up lies about Dr. James White, and making Dr. James White the focus of your ‘hate’ campaign, and trying to push the real issue, which is Ergun Caner’s lack of repentance and confession to the ‘PUBLIC’ that he lied to?

Ergun and Emir Caner have caused more damage to Muslim outreach by lying about what and who they really were.

Seriously, why don’t you stop talking about it, and be the example.

      Preacher Bill:
Where have I attacked, misquoted or made up lies about Dr. James White? I want the evidence please. His own words have come to haunt him. He has been bullying Ergun Caner, Emir Caner, Norm Geisler and others. I personally have talked with him about the Dr. Ergun Caner issue. He brushed my concerns aside. He even dismissed the scripture I had brought to his attention. At least one Muslim has approached him about his “absolute” views of Islamic teachings. He dismissed him. The man teaches himself Islam and has gone a step farther to be the expert even when he only refers to himself as the “student of Islam.” Muslims called him out on his errors. He insults them. Where is the humility that a man of God should have? I know the man is smart, but is he wise? I know other Reformed Christians have approached him as well. He has dismissed them. Preacher Bill, if there is any damage that has been done to Christian outreach to Muslims, Dr. White has done far more. Don’t fool yourself. This man has a vendetta against the Caner brothers because of the debate that never took place in 2006 and he took this saga out of proportion to make up for that. I have one more post about this saga and then I will stop. Will resume again if the bully resumes.

    Hussein,

Thanks for posting this. Honestly, I must agree that James White obviously has not stopped to calculate the cost his crusade has cost, especially to those whom you cited in your piece, Muslims and former-Muslims.

May our Lord be pleased to you you in unspeakable ways.

    With that, I am…
    Peter

Would you please expand on your statement that James White has “publicly has insulted Muslims who have corrected his mistakes on Islam. He also has speculated on issues that have “confirmed” Muslims’ suspicion of Christian ministries’ motives and exacerbated “residual mistrust” that some Christians of Muslim background have of Christianity.”
It’s not clear from your post how he has done these things.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

      Aaron,

My post,”James White’s Reformed Efforts Examined,” shows where Dr. White insulted Muslims who attempted to correct him. You can follow the links to his blog and also his tweets.
